This article contains an overview of results obtained during a new study on changes in agriculture in Latvia after its accession to the European Union. It has been determined that after accession to the EU, the total amount of direct support provided for agriculture and rural development in Latvia has significantly increased; however, that has not affected the types of farming and general indicators of the sector. Without direct support, Latvian farms would have suffered losses in 2005. During 2004-2006, valuable experience was acquired in attracting direct payments to the rural territories, and the total amount of support has increased significantly. It is predicted that in the future a relatively small share of support will be allocated to agriculture. The rural development programme for Latvia 2007-2013, which was drafted for the next funding period, provides a relatively small increase of support for agriculture while larger funding is channeled to other spheres.
