The problems related to the intensification of the effectiveness of alcoholics' treatment have been the focus of researchers and clinicians interested in the explanation of specific and non-specific teratment factors that contribute to treatment outcome. The basie program of alcoholics' treatment is a highly structured and directive therapy conducted according to the principles of strategic and structural treatment. The present research is aimed at answering the question concerning the significance of non-specific healing factors, i.e. the strength of the therapeutic alliance formed at the initial stages of therapy and its contribution to the final outcome. The research model takes into account some individual qualities of patients and therapists and verifies their relationship with treatment outcomes measured by: l) patients' convictions about the possibility of abstinence in situations of higher risk of drinking, 2) the scope of changes introduced into various spheres of life during therapy, and 3) the general treatment outcome (the mean value of the first two dimensions). The research comprised the sample of 78 patients who completed the basie therapy program and 30 therapists leading this kind of therapy. The outcomes indicate that the verified model of variables, mainly patient-related, accounts for 25% of variance of treatment effects. They also confirm the significance of the therapeutic alliance strength and its mediating role between the expectation of negative effects of drinking and final outcomes of basic alcoholics' treatment.
