CATEGORIAL LABELING AND TRUE PROPERTIES OF LINGUISTIC EXPRESSIONS (WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO POLISH 'PATRZEC')
Languages of publication
This article deals with a preliminary characterization of so-called 'agentive verbs of visual perception', with particular reference 'popatrzec' (look). The most basic structures with 'patrzec' are addressed, i.e. 'ktos patrzy na cos' (someone is looking at something) and 'ktos patrzy gdzies/w jakims kierunku' (someone is looking somewhere/in some direction). Grzesiak's (1983,1985) interpretation, according to which the verbal predicate in the latter should be classified as 'non-perceptual' is rejected and it is claimed that the difference between the structures boils down to the fact that in the case of 'ktos patrzy na cos', the object is indicated explicitly, whereas in 'ktos patrzy gdzies/w jakims kierunku' the object is implicit. It is suggested here that the sense of 'ktos patrzy na cos' can be grasped in more or less the following way: someone (x) does something which causes it that x's eyes are so situated in regard of something (y) that (x) sees (y) somewhere. In the case of 'ktos patrzy gdzies/w jakims kierunku', the formula is more complex, for example, someone (x) does something which causes it that x's eyes are so situated in regard of some place (d) that (x) can see something (y), if there is (x), in place (d), or in place/such that/is between x's eyes and (d). According to the formula for the latter, 'patrzec' is a perceptual predicate, and as a result, constructions like 'ktos patrzy w jakims kierunku i nic nie widzi' (someone is looking in some direction and can see nothing) are allowed.
