The present study originally forms the 3rd chapter of the PhD thesis of the author under the title 'Articles of Hungarian periodical publications in Hungarian and international bibliographical databases', defended in 2004. The study primarily deals with Hungarian databases and only examines the representation in international databases within a limited scope. The databases available within Dialog and including records relevant to Hungary are examined from several aspects. Based on data from May 2002 and December 2003, the databases containing records in Hungarian language are reviewed in a breakdown by scientific fields. The data are complemented with additions from the past one and a half year. Looking at the 8 most important databases taken from these two years respectively, the study examines the place of records in Hungarian language in the ranking of languages, and the place of records published in Hungary in the ranking of countries. Based on the level of representation of the journals of Akademiai Kiado in Dialog databases, the article aims to throw light on differences between the national and international cataloguing practices and draws conclusions regarding the necessity of national cataloguing.
