We know a great deal about Tadeusz Peiper. And yet there are some episodes in his life which are shrouded in secrecy: 'his biography includes gaps of which very little can be said with any certainty'. One of such gaps is his sojourn in Spain. Peiper himself was extremely reticent about his Spanish adventure. Why did he never mention anything about it apart from the most trifling incidents? Why did he carefully omit from the collection 'Tedy' all passages about his personal contacts with contemporary artists? Why did he refuse to admit that he had been in touch with the ultraists? The secretive and contradictory story of Peiper's 'Spanish adventure' can be interpreted as a poetic strategy of concealment. One may wonder if this was a deliberate gesture devised by the pioneer of the Polish avantgarde to create and enhance his own legend?
