The term relational adjective is almost exclusively used with reference to denominal forms. The paper closely scrutinises the properties of the most productive type of deverbal adjectives with active semantics in Polish (i.e., adjectives with the suffix -ący), aiming to demonstrate that the key characteristics differentiating between relational and qualitative adjectives derived from nouns can be extended to adjectives derived from verbs. This conclusion is drawn on the basis of various semantic, morphological and distributional criteria. The uniform behaviour of denominal and deverbal adjectives calls for a theory of verb to adjective shift which takes into account the fact that resulting adjectives do not always show prototypical adjectival traits.
