The personal name Kaden, usually interpreted as originating from toponyms, frequently appears in the Central-East German area. The place-name Kaden refers to several communities in German; Kadaň (in German Kaaden) is the name of a town in Northwest Bohemia. The author deals with the interpretation of the name of this town, recorded for the first time in 1183. A pre-Slavonic origin of the name is considered in the article. The suggested interpretation is based on the supposed original form *Katodunum from Celtic catu ,fight, battle‘ and *dunon ,stronghold, fortification‘.
