The paper deals with dog nicknames (and hypocoristics) as a part of the language communication in a small social group. The study characterizes nicknames focusing on their functioning and their perception in language communication from the perspective of the name giver, the group in which the nickname has originated and where it is used, and also its acceptation in respect to the bearer of the nickname (dog) and the users of these nicknames. It also reveals individual preferences in the selection of dog nicknames and hypocoristics due to the nature of group member and dog contacts, or nicknames motivation. The emotional aspect comes up in the most frequent nouns, proper names of the dog, most often in the form of diminutives (as these are used to express positive emotions towards the dog), by which the emotional and social connection of the owner with his/her dog is emphasized. The paper proves an analogy with the functioning of the anthroponymic system of unofficial names.
