The article deals with the controversy concerning the essence of leadership between John Adair and Abraham Zaleznik. In the author's opinion the dispute is caused, to some extent, by conceptual confusion. In this context, the typology of the points of views (follower's, bureaucrat's, administrator's and contrarian's) introduced by J. G. Clawson is discussed. In the analysis of Clawson's three levels of leadership, the author emphasizes ethical requirements which should be observed in the process of transition from the Industrial Age paradigm to the Information Age paradigm.
