State plan of basic research (SPBR) is a part of the history of the Institute of Ethnology of SAS. The plan was introduced in1970. During the whole period the Institute was the main coordinating institution for the ethnographic research in the Czechoslovak Socialistic Republic. It coordinated the scientific research projects and formally led the scientific cooperation. The author's memories highlight some positive and negative sides of this plan institution for the working place and the scientific work in the former Czechoslovakia.
