The author's main aim is to make a critical comparison of two contradictory interpretations of 'English road to modernity' formulated in different times by two prominent American historical sociologists: Barrington Moore Jr and Liah Greenfeld. He tries to mediate their points of view suggesting that it is possible to construct a synthesis which should appear to be rather historical than theoretical. He perceives the economic and structural senior scholar's way of analysis as deeply grounded, but less inventive than the second proposal, an account of the importance of one of the most expansive phenomenon of modernity and post-modernity, which is still nationalism.
