The paper discusses changes in the understanding of literary criticism in the Warsaw press at the turn of 19th century, taking as an example 'Tygodnik Ilustrowany', the most popular cultural periodical of the time. The author focuses on journalistic achievements of Ignacy Matuszewski, whose views played an important role in shaping the agenda of 'Tygodnik Ilustrowany' as well as contemporary concepts in literary criticism. The weekly's evolution is discussed against the background of developments in Warsaw's cultural press of the time.
