The aim of this article is an attempt to find a reply to the question whether applied mathematics is a field of knowledge (tekhne). There is no doubt that pure mathematics was regarded as 'episteme'; however, the matter is not so obvious with applied mathematics. Is it a field of knowledge that belongs to the sphere of 'episteme'? Is it a field of knowledge that belongs to the sphere of 'tekhne' or, rather, is it a field that lies on the border of the two? In the article the authoress presents an outline of related issues from Pythagoras to Aristotle. There is also presented a definition (tekhne) and criteria of demarcation between pure mathematics and applied mathematics.
