The article deals with different perceptions of the same facts by different groups living in the borderland. According to the author both Poles and Lithuanians often consider the same people national heroes. However, there are also individuals and events which are perceived differently even by members of the same group. Reflections on historical consciousness are based on the example of dispute over Vilnius in the years between the two world wars. According to the author this quarrel is very important as it caused the Polish-Lithuanian relationship to be perceived in a very stereotypical way. A few contradicting perceptions of the dispute - by Juozas Kudirka, Albertas Gerutis, Juliusz Klos - are presented in the article. The choice of authors was not coincidental and its purpose was to show the wide spectrum of historical explanations concerning the dispute over Vilnius. Besides, the article was meant to emphasize, how different the analyses can be. The authors usually mention only situations which they find useful in explaining their theses. Other facts they tend to omit. The fourth presented version of the dispute was the modern integrated approach. The author does not want to analyze history only through politics. He believes that while conducting research on historical consciousness in the borderland other factors should also be taken into consideration, such as cultural law and territorial bond. Without this it is impossible to rewrite history in such a way that it would be accepted by all neighboring nations. According to the author sociological research could help overcome stereotypes and conflicts. That is why conducting of such research is still important.
