Abstracts

Charles Nodier, the author of fantastic short stories, is famous for scholarly references to ancient literature. In 'Smarra' he points out the sources of his inspiration very clearly (e.g. Apuleius). There are also references to Shakespeare (The Tempest, One Summer Night's Dream, The Merchant of Venice). Taking up the subject of nightmares and dream visions, Nodier turned to the authors who also used these topics. However, he was also inspired by painters, contemporary to him, - in particular Fussli and Goya.
