The research described in the first and second part of the article is an attempt to find out if personality variables regulating human behaviour, such as value system, self esteem, ideal self portrait and type of life aims differ in youth groups of various level of sociali adaptation, including ill adapted groups marked by criminal behaviour. Therefore it is the research aim to check if personality variables may protect youth from braking social rules. In the first part the authoress concentrates on the values system accepted by various groups. It is the first research involving Polish youth based on the Shalom Shwartz Portraits' Questionnaire.
