The article presents the result of analysis of two questions: the form of Polish and French odonyms (proper names of streets, squares, etc.) as well as the technique of translating the odonyms contained in press texts from French to Polish. The first part consists of analysis of the elements creating the odonyms that appear on maps of five French cities and five Polish cities. Comparison is made of the number of forms functioning as a component identifying an odonym, e.g., (French) rue, boulevard, impasse, (Polish) ulica, aleja, plac, as well as their frequency. Also observed are components that distinguish odonyms, e.g. (French) Saint Nicolas, Orfevres, de la Comédie, (Polish) Jana-Pawla II, Arsenalska, Glówna. Taken into account in the classifications are the structure, descriptive content, and commemorative or motivational character. Comparison of French and Polish odonym systems led to the conclusion that the differing frequency of choice of forms from a related collection of structures determines the dissimilarity of these systems. The analysis of translation practices is preceded by an overview of recommendations regarding the translation of odonyms formulated by interpreters. In the section devoted to odonyms used in an informational-localizational function, examples are presented of use by interpreters of four translation techniques of components identifying odonyms and three translation techniques differentiating odonyms, as well as conclusions regarding the frequency of application of the individual techniques. In the section dedicated to odonyms used in a metonymic function, only one observed technique used by interpreters was presented.
