The author discuses the dynamics of the transition of India into a modern state. The consideration of the important role of tradition, which had always been taken into account by the Indian republic founders, caused that the Indian way to modernization was a bold one, but also compromising with the social reality of India - i.e. the cast system. The process of the creation of Indian modernity is seen as confronted with many problems, the major part of them being inherited from tradition, like that of how to protect India from external powers and internal disintegration, but also those raised by the modernity itself - e.g. nationalism.
