Eugeniusz Kazimirowski painted the oil-painting Jesus Christ as the Divine Mercy in 1934 under the patronage of Father MichaƂ Sopocko, who served as a confessor to Saint Maria Faustyna of the Most Blessed Sacrament and championed her mystical experiences, especially the crucial one from February 22, 1931 - a direct basis of the painting. Its devotional effectiveness - the devotion to the Divine Mercy via various congregations and orders - worldwide in the Catholic Christianity and its role in the transformations of Poland in the 20th and early 21st centuries make this painting one of the socially most influential paintings of the twentieth century.
