Generally, the border area is a space where criterial symbols are constructed. Those symbols are the background signs for national identity of individuals. One of such symbols on the Polish - Lithuanian - Belorussian border area can be the Neman River. It runs near the border of every mentioned culture in the sense of a territory, but in the sense of a meaning it is in the centre. Te central issue for this process is a historical context, which constructs a substructure for the cultural identity of an individual. Samples of history are the towns. In a given space there are: Vilnius, Hrodna and Suprasl. Every one of them represents a separate space for national identity, but for centuries they shared a common space for different groups.
