The article concerns writings of the Croatian Renaissance poet Petar Zoranic (1508 - after 1543) and it focuses on the analysis of the motif of poetic inspiration in his pastoral love story 'Planine' (1536). Meta-literary aspect of the text is manifested by the ancient topos of Muses which is personified in the piece in the character of a native nymph (Vila Hrvatica). Zoranic's piece is an important testimony of literary awareness of those times. The literary programme enclosed in 'Planine' remains in dialogue with native and religious tradition. At the same time it is an interesting example of adaptation of poetry concept revived by humanists which sees poetry as glorifying and self-governing art. Therefore, the ancient concept is juxtaposed with Christian values.
