Tristana, the name of the protagonist in Benito Pérez Galdós’s novel Tristana (1892), allows, requires and deserves multiple interpretations. Some of the interpretations that are prompted by the co-text as well as the wider literary and social context are given in order to indicate some of the aesthetic functions of the name in the novel.
