The relationships between philosophy (philosophical milieu) and humanistic disciplines (the arts milieu) are described. First, the historical roots of present relationships are described, in the first place the dispute between positivism and traditional philosophy that involved such an use of the term 'philosophy' that it described both something thought as prestigious and ridiculous. Semantic and heuristic ambiguities connected with the use of the word 'philosophy' are visible at the present as well, and influence intellectuals' self-definition: as 'philosophers' or as 'sociologists' and so on, but not philosophers. Then the author describes the place of philosophers on the contemporary intellectual stage. Prestigious roles are reserved for famous philosophers, made so by their own talents but also by media and editors. Less famous philosophers cannot profit from advantages of the pathetic rhetoric connected with the philosophical vocation. It is more suitable for them to dissolve in milieu of the arts.
