Centra handlowe funkcjonujące w zewnętrznych obszarach dużych miast mogą być przyczyną szeregu zmian o różnorakim charakterze. Małe miasta mogą stracić podstawy funkcjonowania oraz pełnione funkcje usługowe wobec otaczających je obszarów wiejskich, jeżeli znajdą się w „zasięgu” oddziaływania centrów handlowych. Z drugiej strony, centra handlowe poprzez oddziaływania konkurencyjne w handlu, mogą przyczyniać się do podniesienia jakości świadczonych usług. Celem pracy była ocena oddziaływania centrów handlowych na przedsiębiorców działających w małych miastach i na obszarach wiejskich, położonych w subregionie zachodnim województwa śląskiego. Centra handlowe stanowią bezpośrednią konkurencję dla 33% ankietowanych przedsiębiorców, narzekających także na wysokie koszty. Podsumowując, centra handlowe stanowią znaczną konkurencję dla przedsiębiorców, przyczyniając się także do poprawy jakości i konkurencyjności świadczonych usług.

The development of shopping malls affects in the different ways on the outer areas of the large cities. The negative effect can be the disappearance of foundations of economic business in the small towns, which performs services to the surrounding rural areas, while the positive can be declining prices and improving the quality of offered services. The aim of the work was assessment of the impact of shopping malls on entrepreneurs operating in small towns and rural areas, located in the western subregion of Silesia Voivodeship. On the basis of the conducted survey in 2012 with entrepreneurs in selected municipalities, the economic impact of shopping centers was specified. Shopping centers are direct competition for a large number of entrepreneurs surveyed, 33% of the total number. Shopping malls are competition for entrepreneurs but also contribute to improving the quality and competitiveness of the provided services.
