The text is devoted to the discussion and critical evaluation of Wilhelm Dilthey's theory of worldviews. It is divided into three parts. The first part serves as a general introduction to Dilthey's thought against the backdrop of the mood of the era, a discussion of his significance for the grounding of the humanities, and an explanation of why this thinker is counted among the representatives of the so-called philosophy of life. The second part deals with Dilthey's theory of worldviews. It discusses the structure of worldviews and the role of historical thinking and of the crisis of metaphysics for Dilthey's thought; this is followed by an analysis of the three major types of worldviews in philosophy: naturalism, idealism of freedom, and objective idealism, each in relation to a particular attitude of life and listing its significant representatives. The third part contains critical conclusions; it also serves to evaluate Dilthey's worldview theory. The results of thisevaluation are, in general, moderately favorable.
