In the article the Author describes expenditures for travel services as a measure of prosperity of a society. She describes tourism industry as area of the economy, services in general, as well as tourist products and tourist services as subject of international trade. The Author indicates main differences between products and services and describes demand and supply in tourist industry which is important part of world economy. Successively the ways of measuring the prosperity of society other than GDP and 5 EU countries with the lowest and 5 EU countries with the highest level of expenditures for tourism were distinguished. The Author focuses on prosperity of the countries selected on the basis of tourism expenditures criteria. They are described on the basis of Human Development Index and the Author draws conclusions on correspondence between expenditures on tourism industry and broadly defined wealth of society.
