The author analyses Japans relations with China during the last 30 years, in particular the issue of the peace treaty and its singnificance for their interrelations. He enumerates as the main obstacles which hindered the negotiations: the problem of an "anti-hegemonistic clause", territorial conflict concerning the Senkaku Islands (Diaoyu) and the Soviet-Chinese treaty of friendship, alliance and mutual co-operation of 1950. Apart from strictly political contradictions, internal political events in both countries played an important role in halting or promoting negotiations. Japan's distrust in her Chinese partner constituted also an important factor. Eventually the peace treaty was signed in 1978 under the influence of the USA and their positive attitude towards the development of the Japan's relations with China. The solution of the territorial issue was postponed till indefinite time. In this way Japan's relations with China have been normalised that contributed significantly to the development of economic co-operation.
