As it turns out, Ukraine is a place of clash of cultures, religions, languages, traditions and geopolitical clashes or important historical events. The remarkable history and present of Ukraine are not particularly exceptional in the Central or Eastern European area, it often only complete the picture of this diverse geographical area. Its religious differentiation and the connection of religion to historical, (geo) political and social milestones and processes also contribute to the diversity of Ukraine. The purpose of the paper is to clarify the role and position of religious institutions in Ukraine after 1991, when Ukraine gained independence, and to describe socio-political changes related to religious societies and their relationship with the Ukrainian state.
