Traditionally, this episode was interpreted as «the communion of the devil» Recently, however, M. A. Robinson and L. I. Sazonova interpreted it as an analogue of Church communion. In fact, this motif is partly ambivalent. He has a complex semantics: blasphemous travesty of Church communion, denial of God (the ambivalent submotif – cries of roosters associated with the denial of apostle Peter), theatrical mark of the completion of the Satan's ball, correlated with Gounod's Faust, etc. The semantics of the episode corresponds to the author's idea of the novel, which is characterized by the uncertainty of the ratio between «darkness» (Woland) and «light» (Yeshua).
