In this paper, I examine the petitions submitted by female Holocaust survivors to the city of Košice, which was ceded to Hungary in 1938. My primary focus is on petitions filed between 1945 and 1948, following the restoration of Czechoslovakia, in which survivors sought to obtain a certificate of national and political reliability – a prerequisite for acquiring Czechoslovak citizenship – or requested restitution and social support. This analysis centres on the reasons for which survivors requested the certificate, shedding light on their adaptive strategies for integrating into post-war Czechoslovak society, a society fundamentally shaped by nationalism and socialism. Furthermore, I examine how social connections among Holocaust survivors, in addition to the official legal criteria, played a role in determining their success in securing the certificate. I also explore the attitude of the local political elite toward Holocaust survivors during this period. Another question I address is how the local post-war political elite, who held decision-making authority, responded to these petitions. This investigation aims to contribute to our understanding of the complex dynamics of integration and memory in the immediate aftermath of World War II in Czechoslovakia.
