The theatre acting of Marián Zednikovič (1951 – 2007) encompassed versatility, dynamism, perspective, caricature, and grotesquery with the tragicomic and dramatic tone of a tragic clown. In the productions for children (and even adult spectators) of the Theatre for Children and Youth in Trnava, he astonished with his exceptional motoric talent, improvisation skills and unexpected gags (Scapin – Molière: Scapin the Schemer, 1975; Michal (Charlie) – Miroslava Čibenková: Charlie, 1979), and captivated the audience also in stock character roles of world classics (Khlestakov – Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol: The Government Inspector, 1978, etc.). In the Nová scéna theatre in Bratislava and, later, in the ASTORKA Korzo ‘90 theatre, he demonstrated his ability to layer several positions of expressive-eruptive acting and of cut words and gestures, and to work with shortcuts of grotesque and dramatic elements. His characters (Glumov – Alexander Nikolayevich Ostrovsky: Enough Stupidity in Every Wise Man, 1983; Tartuffe in Molière’s comedy of the same title, 1988, etc.) mirrored the contemporary degradation of human relationships and of the society, the fatigue and deformation of the new society (Ivan Petrovich Voynitsky – Anton Pavlovich Chekhov: Ujo Váňa [Uncle Vanya], 1996; Neschastlivstev – Ostrovsky: Les [The Forest], 1997), humanly reasoning intellectual rebellion (Lucifer – Rudolf Sloboda: Macocha [The Stepmother], 1996), or the tragic undertones of an ordinary man (Anton Brtko – Ladislav Grosman: The Shop on Main Street, 2000).
