Rittmeister Fieldpilot Georg von Lehmann served in the Austro-Hungarian air force from the beginning of World War I, initially as a pilot and observer with Flik 11 on the north-eastern front, and, following the fall of the Przemyśl fortress and the unit’s reformation, as its commander. In December 1915, he took command of Flik 8, which was stationed on the southwestern battlefield, first on the Isonzo front and later in South Tyrol. Subsequently, the unit, renamed Flik 8D in the summer of 1917, was transferred to the Russian battlefield. The final phase of Georg von Lehmann’s service as commander of Flik 8D was associated with the Grappa section of the Italian front. This article examines Georg von Lehmann’s air service and related events, including the air connection between besieged Przemyśl and the rear areas (largely maintained by Flik 11 crews), participation in the raid on railway bridges over the Piava River in March 1916, and the deployment of aviation before and during the Kerensky Offensive in the summer of 1917.
