Roger Bacon is one of the precursors of the empirical study of nature. His investigation of the laws of optics and the nature of light led him to original discoveries regarding perception. Using the rules of geometrical optics and known facts about the physiology of the lens of the eye and about the parts of the human brain, he attempted to justify how it is possible that we indeed perceive world as such, not just our ideas. I call his realism based upon geometrical optics a direct realism and explain why I believe this term to be adequate. In my paper I elaborate upon Bacon’s way of thinking. In particular, I point out the basically true or false points of his justification and improve his theory of direct realism with reference to physical optics, the laws of thermodynamics, and the physical theory of quanta.
