This paper looks into the dynamics of cultural transformation and appropriation by means of theatrical representation as reflected in Takarazuka Revue Company’s highly successful performances which emerged as the result of the cooperation with the French composer Gérard Presgurvic and spanning two major topics: Romeo and Juliet and Napoléon Bonaparte’s life. Based on extensive fieldwork and literature research, the current analysis highlights the dynamics of cultural identity with focus on the construction of masculinity at the crossroads of conservative values and progressive lifestyles.
