The altar sculptures for the Dominicans and Jesuits in Lublin realized around the same time – in the late 1750s and early 1760s – are the best-known figurative works made by Sebastian Zeisel. They use high quality, fully developed rococo plasticity in the luminaire of the baroque theatrum sacrum. The works for Lublin most fully revealed the creative possibilities of the sculptor. The form was shaped largely according to the meaning, using significant solutions and treatments that might have been appropriate to express it. The altar sculpture was an intermediary in experiencing the Absolute through faith, also impacting the intellectual cognizance through reading carried by their meanings. These works reflect directly the methods and aims of the Dominican and Jesuit spirituality, and the spirit of the theatre epoch.
