"Celem niniejszego artykułu jest charakterystyka programu ESPON jako programu badawczego opartego na współpracy międzynarodowej. Tłem do analizy programu ESPON jest omówienie wyników badań innych programów badawczych stymulujących współpracę naukową, a w szczególności Programów Ramowych Unii Europejskiej. Następnie zaprezentowane są cele programu ESPON, jego założenia i kontekst instytucjonalny, a także mechanizmy stosowane w celu stymulowania współpracy. Empiryczna część artykułu składa się z analizy udziału w programie ESPON przeprowadzonej na trzech poziomach: poszczególnych instytucji badawczych, miast oraz państw, w których instytucje te są zlokalizowane. Kolejnym elementem analizy jest charakterystyka sieci współpracy w programie przeprowadzona na poziomie instytucji z wykorzystaniem podstawowych miar centralności (degree centrality oraz betweenness centrality). Zaproponowane w artykule analizy mają dać odpowiedź na następujące pytania badawcze: • Jaki jest udział instytucji, miast i państw w programie ESPON (czy jest „zrównoważony”, czy zdominowany przez niektóre jednostki)? • Jaki jest kształt sieci współpracy w ramach programu (czy jest ona silnie scentralizowana, czy składa się z niepołączonych komponentów)? • Jaki może być wpływ takiego właśnie zaangażowania instytucji w programie na jego wyniki merytoryczne (adekwatność analiz dla wszystkich krajów objętych programem, liczba krajowych studiów przypadków)?"

The aim of the article was to characterise ESPON as a network-based international research programme and the evaluation of capacity of network analysis in studying scientific cooperation. Results of the study show that institutions involved in ESPON projects create a dense, closely interconnected network of cooperation. The network is dominated by a limited number of institutions, which are involved in large share of the projects and have the most expanded cooperation network. Spatial analysis proves, that there is significant lack of institutions from Central-Eastern Europe in the Programme. Network analysis allowed to identify the most efficient methods for improving the presence of Polish institutions in the ESPON Programme.
