The article describes the issues connected with the methodology of developing and improving textual competence in Polish language classes. Specific topics treated in the article include: textual competence against other types of competences (linguistic, communicative, interactional, discursive), text editing skills in language education before and after 1998 (on the basis of curricula), expectations concerning texts written by pupils (formulated on the basis of the 2008 core curriculum), the most important problems related to the organization of the education processes within the scope of writing and speaking skills, and finally the challenges that the modern language didactic faces.
