This study examines the settlement of a selected area in the southern part of central Slovakia – the Cerová vrchovina highland – during the La Tène Period. It assesses the current state of archaeological research, which is insufficient and characterised by a minimal number of comprehensively investigated sites. The current archaeological site mapping and the outlined settlement scenario of the Cerová vrchovina highlands during the La Tène Period allow for the formulation of hypotheses rather than definitive conclusions. Nevertheless, the study raises and summarises several research questions, including future research perspectives. The particular scientific significance of the analysed area is highlighted by the grave goods from the Drňa and Ratka-Malá Ratka sites, primarily dated into the stage from Transitional horizon to the Middle La Tène Period (lTB2/c1 – lTc1). Considering the environmental parameters within the observed framework and considering the results of archaeological research in other regions of Slovakia and Central Europe, it can be concluded that the Cerová vrchovina highland had a limited economic exploitative capacity during the La Tène Period, with a primary transit and peripheral character.
