The article is based on a fieldwork focussed on the concepts of purity and uncleanness in relation to hygiene of young females’ bodies. The paper provides an insight into women’s daily and monthly routines aimed to maintain a clean state of the body. The author deals with the following questions: 1) how a daily routine changes during menstruation period; 2) what criteria women apply when choosing menstrual products; and 3) what are the attitudes towards advertisements of products related to menstruation. The author analyses ethnographic data which were obtained through ethnographic interviews conducted with 15 women aged between 20 and 24. The research took place in Bratislava. The results of the data analysis are interpreted in accordance with Mary Douglas’ concepts of purity and impurity.
