From an analysis of key moments in history, which could have considerably influenced the course and extent of the expulsion of the Germans from Czechoslovakia in 1945–47, the author sketches out possible consequences that a large number of Germans’ remaining in Czechoslovakia would have had on the political, economic, and social development of Czechoslovakia from the liberation in 1945 to the end of the Communist régime in late 1989 and, in some respects, also in the period that followed. The basic premise of the article is that in any event at least a partial expulsion would have been carried out and at most one and half million Germans would have remained in Czechoslovakia. Such a large number of Germans remaining in the country might have modifi ed some of the conditions of Czechoslovak economic and social development, particularly in the 1950s and 1960s, but would most likely not have had any substantial effect on developments in the country in the second half of the twentieth century or on the present Czech state or Czech-German relations today.
