W opracowaniu podjęto problematykę znaczenia szkolnictwa wyższego w działalności badawczo-rozwojowej wybranych krajów. Celem artykułu było ustalenie występujących w gospodarce światowej modeli udziału uczelni w B+R oraz próba oceny ich efektywności w kontekście współczesnych wyzwań. Przeprowadzone badania pozwoliły na identyfikację czterech modeli. Podjęto także badania efektywności B+R szkolnictwa wyższego. Wykazano, że najskuteczniejszym modelem jest model I (oparty na biznesie), który cechują wysokie nakłady na B+R (w odniesieniu do PKB) oraz realizacja B+R przez uczelnie na poziomie najwyżej kilkunastu procent. Sprzyja on prowadzeniu przez uczelnie badań stosowanych i rozwojowych oraz zaangażowaniu biznesu w finansowanie B+R uczelni, a w efekcie daje podstawy do funkcjonowania uczelni w systemie potrójnej helisy.

The study was taken the issue of importance of higher education in research and development in selected countries. The aim was to identify models of universities in R&D in the world economy and try to assess their effectiveness in the context of contemporary challenges. The study allowed the identification of four models. It has been shown that the most effective model is the model I (based on the business) which is characterized by high expenditures on R&D (relative to GDP) and the implementation of R&D by universities to a maximum over a dozen percent. It promotes the realisation of applied research and experimental development by universities and the involvement of business in the higher eduction R&D and in effect gives rise to the functioning of the universities in system of the triple helix.
