This article is concerned with the role that ICT plays in the process of developing an information society, based on continuous gaining and using knowledge. The author points out to the demographic processes which are now taking place and refers to the necessary actions which should be undertaken to constantly raise people’s qualifications. In the dynamically changing reality and global economy a continuous improvement of the key skills is now practically a necessity. Referring to the 2002-2010 surveys of the Polish Public Opinion Research Centre we can observe tendencies with regard to the use of new technologies by the Polish society. Attention is also paid to the role of Information Technology and the Internet in interpersonal communication and the possibilities of using them.
