The aim of this article is to present the Rajput community and to demonstrate its emergence as a result of a long and complex process of forming the new ruling class of medieval Rajasthan in North India. Over centuries the term ‘rajput’ also gained different meanings, which are referred to in the article. The emergence of Rajputs serves as an example of social mobility and of a new pattern of social order in the reality of medieval India, which challenged the Brahmanic social order
