Hutsul Month Names in Jan Janów’s Fieldnotes from the Years 1936-1938 (In Connection with the Language Differentiation of the Hutsul Region) In the years 1936-1938 Jan Janów and his students recorded in the Hutsul region a very rich vocabulary, containing, among others, the names of months. Only part of them was published in the J. Janów’s Hutsul Dictionary (JSH). The analysis of these month names, excerpted from the J. Janów field notes, shows that their areal differentiation agree with the fundamental differentiation of the Hutsul (and Pokuttja) dialects into two parts: western and eastern ones, given by J. Janów. This conclusion is also confirmed by data from the Hutsul dictionary files kept at the Institute for Ukrainian Studies in Lviv which were excerpted by Dr. T. Yastremska. Such a division of the Hutsul dialects can be traced in the area of other words presented on 30 maps of the Hutsul lexical atlas (LAH); some of these words are demonstrated on maps 2-5 in the presented paper.
