The author links together refl ections on persecution in his own family in Communist Czechoslovakia in the early 1950s with the fate of Rudolf Margolius as described by his son, Ivan, in the memoir-like Praha za zrcadlem: Putování 20. stoletím (Prague through the Looking-glass: Travels through the Twentieth Century; Prague: Argo, 2007). A devoted Communist and, after the February 1948 takeover, Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade, Rudolf Margolius was sentenced in the show trial of Rudolf Slánský and the alleged members of the “centre of the anti-state conspiracy” in 1952, and executed.
