The inauguration of the kings on the stone throne belongs to very old forms of legitimizing the royal power. John of Fordun’s description (latter half of the 14th c.) of the enthronement of King Alexander III of Scotland permits us to closely examine this tradition. The author of the paper inter alia presents in a comparative perspective the most important stages, into which John of Fordun divided the event described; he also points out the role of the stone throne, the so-called Stone of Destiny, and the special properties attributed to the site of the royal enthronement.
