The important Slovak thinker, essayist, poet and physician Pavol Strauss (1912 – 1994) created the Christian line in the spectrum of Central European cultural development with his testimony of life and work. Within the literary context of the 20th century, it is possible to connect his work to generational comrades from Slovak Catholic modernism. The aim of the study is to analyse the values and virtues in the selected work of Paul Strauss. In Christianity, a system of virtues was gradually formed, which have their hierarchy in the spiritual life of a person. The four cardinal virtues (wisdom, fortitude, meekness, justice) are particularly important, with which many other human moral virtues are closely related. Several testimonies that Pavol Strauss was characterized by those virtues can be found on the website http://www.pavolstrauss.sk/, where Spolok priateľov MUDr. Pavla Straussa [Society of Friends of Dr. Pavol Strauss] has been trying to provide a broader scientific and popular education about his life and work. It usually publishes the magazine Listy Pavla Straussa [Letters of Pavol Strauss] once or twice a year, participates in the publication of the author’s work in various book re-editions, archives many sources, information and links to television documentaries and radio programmes dedicated to him. The given analysis of values and virtues in the selected work of Pavol Strauss thus brings an interpretive view of how they are reflected in the consciousness of the contemporary recipient.
