The paper concerns the formal side of the discourse of religious modernism in XIX century. Focusing on one of the most representative philosophers of this approach – Hugenes Félicité Robert de Lamennais – I try to sketch some primary rules of modernism. My thesis is quite simple. The religious modernism is a good exponent of a popular attempt to materialise the language. By materialisation of language I understand the abandoning of the traditional semantic approach to the language, important especially in case of understanding the moral language of thomism, and replacing it by a quasi-physical one based on spatial and geometrical metaphors.
