This paper provides additional information which complements the article “On Dolník’s theory of standard language” by V. Dovalil published in Slovo a slovesnost (73, 2012, no. 2). This is done in consideration of the fact that Dovalil’s article is short of relevant information on the content of Dolník’s book, hence potential readers may gain a distorted idea of the theory. The author describes the theory’s fundamental ideas as well as the methodological basis for the explication of the standard language. The theory is based on the thesis that standard Slovak, originally an “artificial” language, optimally approached the status of natural language (mother tongue) and became a “folk” language at a higher stage of development. The goal of the theory is to discover the nature of the standard language at this stage of development in order to undertake qualified language cultivation. According to the author, this task can be handled using a cultural studies and pragmatics approach to the standard language.
