The present paper is based on the concept of the theory of lexical motivation (TLM) and deals with the process of univerbation. Within TLM, univerbation is understood as a complex phenomenon having several dimensions. On one hand, it is the process, the loss of syntactic motivation (i.e. syntactic demotivation) and, on the other hand, it is the formation of another type of motivation. It is also the relation between a multi-word expression (underlying, motivating element – U1) and a coined, motivated one-word expression. Moreover, it is a feature of the motivated word (as a result of the process of univerbation – U2). The first part of the present paper gives an overview of the current knowledge in the field of the Czech and Slovak linguistics and offers arguments against some concepts. Consequently, the interpretation attempts at providing a complex treatment of univerbation, including its scope, components and character. Furthermore, the relation between U1 and U2 is explained in its complexity, including formal, semantic, communication, pragmatic, genetic and relational levels.
